چکیده

The biased choice model (BCM) of Lute (1963) and general recognition theory (CRT) of Ashby and Townsend (1986) are compared with respect to their ability to account for data from identification experiments. Specifically, by using CRT we investigate the ability of the BCM to account for data characterized by violations of perceptual independence and perceptual and decisional separability, and by homoscedasticity of the perceptual distributions. The effects of varying the dimensionality of the perceptual space are also studied. It is shown that the BCM has extreme difficulty accounting for data from experiments in which: (1) the stimuli are constructed from two physical components; (2) the perceptual means are positioned unevenly in the perceptual space; and (3) different stimuli are characterized by different amounts of perceptual variability or perceptual dependence. In general, however, the BCM has no difficulty with violations of perceptual or decisional separability. It is shown that CRT is not a special case of the BCM but that the two models do intersect. The BCM is shown to be closely tied to a number of different forms of symmetry that can be found in identification data and these are used to construct specific GRT models that are compatible with the BCM.

Rational Choice Theory: A Cultural Reconsideration

Economists have heralded the formulation of the expected utility theorem as a universal method of choice under uncertainty. In their seminal paper, Stigler and Becker (Stigler & Becker, 1977) declared that “human behavior can be explained by a generalized calculus of utility-maximizing behavior” (p.76). The universality of the rational choice theory has been widely criticized by psychologists, ...

The Relative Sensitivities of Same-different and Identification Judgment Models to Perceptual Dependence

Probabilistic models of same-different and identification judgments are compared (within each paradigm) with regard to their sensitivity to perceptual dependence or the degree to which the underlying psychological dimensions are correlated. Three same-different judgment models are compared. One is a step function or decision bound model and the other two are probabilistic variants of a similari...

A Berry-Esseen Type Bound for the Kernel Density Estimator of Length-Biased Data

Length-biased data are widely seen in applications. They are mostly applicable in epidemiological studies or survival analysis in medical researches. Here we aim to propose a Berry-Esseen type bound for the kernel density estimator of this kind of data. The rate of normal convergence in the proposed Berry-Esseen type theorem is shown to be O(n^(-1/6) ) modulo logarithmic term as n tends to infin...

Ranking stocks of listed companies on Tehran stock exchange using a hybrid model of decision tree and logistic regression

Much research has introduced linear or nonlinear models using statistical models and machine learning tools in artificial intelligence to estimate Iran's rate of return. The primary purpose of these methods is simultaneously use different independent variables to improve stock return rates' modeling. However, in predicting the rate of return, in addition to the modeling method, the degree of co...

A New Model Selection Test with Application to the Censored Data of Carbon Nanotubes Coating

Model selection of nano and micro droplet spreading can be widely used to predict and optimize of different coating processes such as ink jet printing, spray painting and plasma spraying. The idea of model selection is beginning with a set of data and rival models to choice the best one. The decision making on this set is an important question in statistical inference. Some tests and criteria a...
